Summer Engawa

A Showa-era electric fan oscillates beside a glass wind chime on a wooden veranda — half realistic, half cheaply illustrated, with a procedurally synthesised chime.

Summer Engawa

An afternoon on the engawa — the narrow wooden veranda that runs along the outside of a traditional Japanese house. A retro electric fan from somewhere in the late Showa era turns its head left and right; a glass fūrin hangs from the eave, and its paper tanzaku catches the breeze each time the fan swings its way. The chime is synthesised in the browser from a handful of detuned sine partials, so each strike is slightly different.

The scene is deliberately split between two registers — careful gradient lighting, dust motes drifting in the slanted afternoon sun, and a long shadow on the planks; against flat cartoon shapes, chunky black outlines, and a fan motor that wobbles a little too obviously. Realism and cheapness, sharing the floor.
